Office of Safe and Healthy Students Grant

On January 16, 2013, President Obama proposed a specific plan, Now is the Time (NITT), to protect our children and communities by reducing gun violence. Scranton School District received one of the 41 awards out of 566 applications for the grant, which is an important complement to the new proposed mental health programs in NITT. The goal of the Office of Safe and Healthy Students grant is to provide funds to local educational agencies (LEA's) to enable schools to develop innovative approaches for initiating counseling programs that contribute to growth, educational development, and social-emotional well-being of students served.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates that during the course of their school years, one in five children will experience a significant mental health problem. Programs that promote mental health can help students cope with common issues, support healthy development, and improve educational outcomes.
