FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE AUGUST 6, 2019
SCRANTON SCHOOL BOARD STATEMENT ON MEETINGS SCHEDULED FOR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 5TH
This evening the Scranton School Board will convene its Budget & Finance committee in order to review the details of the proposed preliminary 2020 budget. Revenues and expenditures will be explained and increases and decreases from the 2018 to 2019 years will be justified.
On Wednesday evening, the Scranton School Board will hold a Special Meeting for General Purposes. Under consent agenda, the following will be considered: Delinquent Tax Report, Repository Sales, Facilities Usage Agreements and Special Education Settlements. Resolutions will be presented by the Budget & Finance, Operations and Personnel Committees. The Board will vote to accept the Proposed Preliminary 2020 General Fund Budget and to request an exception to exceed the Act 1 Cap for Tax Increases. Both are a matter of procedure and do not determine with certainty the details of the Final 2020 Budget.
The Recovery Plan will not be adopted during Wednesday’s meeting. Directors continue to meet with the CRO, Dr. Candis Finan, in an effort to understand the finer points of the plan and to offer ideas that may contribute to potential forthcoming amendments. Although participation is welcome at all legislative meetings, there will be ample opportunity for public comment before the plan is approved or denied at month’s end.
The Board looks forward to continuing its efforts alongside Superintendent Alexis T. Kirijan, Ed. D., District administration, the Scranton Federation of Teachers, the SEIU 32BJ, the Chief Recovery Officer and the Pennsylvania Department of Education. All are working in concert to implement a plan that will bring the Scranton School District to solvency in the most fair, reasonable and efficient manner possible.
