Scranton High School is proud to announce that a total of fourteen students have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program Exams.  The College Board is a not-for-profit membership organization whose mission is to connect students to college success and opportunity.   Among its best-know programs are the SAT, the PSAT/NMSQT and the Advanced Placement Program.

The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program offers students the opportunity to take challenging college-level courses while still in high school with the possibility of earning college credit.  The AP Program is based on the premise that college-level material can be taught successfully to highly capable secondary students.

Scranton High School Juniors and Seniors took over one hundred AP Exams across ten curriculum areas in May 2009.  Scranton High School earned a total AP Grade Average proficiency rating of 3.7 out of a possible 5 on the AP rubric scale, while the recognized SHS AP Scholars earned a 3.0 out of 5.

The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on student performance on AP exams.  Seven students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP exams with grades of 3 or higher.  The AO Scholars are: Elisa Colchado, Thomas Flaherty, David Holden, Andria Kowalchik, Alexander Livanos, Vihn Nguyen and Jordan Sack.

Six students qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.  The AP Scholars with Honor are: Anthony Dilmore, Craig Fisher, Joseph Shoemaker, Brian Shoener, Gregory Stewart and Brock Walsh.

One student qualified for the ZP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.  The AP Scholar with Distinction is: Timothy McCormick.

The AP certified faculty teaching the above AP students at Scranton High School for the 2008-09 school year includes: Lorraine Babarsky, Matt Loftus, Phil Duffy, Judy Gruen, Marge Loughney, Lynne Huggler and Tim O’Hearn.
