Secondary Schools Attire/Uniform Dress Code

The Scranton School District has adopted the following school uniform policy for grades 9-12.  The uniforms may be worn in any combination.  School uniforms are mandatory and the Uniform Policy will be strictly enforced pursuant to the attached discipline guidelines.

·         All students must attend school each day in uniform.

·         Embroidery/monogramming with “SHS, WSHS, KNIGHT, INVADERS, SSD, Scranton School District or other respective school logo” are optional.

·         All uniform pieces must be appropriately sized for the child that is, they must be no more than one regular size larger than the student actually measures.  Extra wide, extra full, extra long, baggy or sagging pants and shorts are not acceptable.

·         No emblems, tags, or logos are allowed on uniform clothing except for the District monogramming/embroidery.

·         All the colors musts be solid, that is, without patterns, designs, checks, slogans, etc.

·         Uniforms may be purchased at store/vendor of your choice, as long as they conform to this Uniform Policy.

·         Non-uniform day fund-raising is limited to two (2) days per year.

·         Shirts should be tucked in.

 

AMENDMENTS

 

The vendor or any individual school may not amend this policy unilaterally.  The School Board of Central Administration must approve all changes to this Uniform Policy.

SUBSIDY

 

Families may qualify under certain income guidelines for uniform subsidy from a particular vendor.  Please see your Principal for further info.

Note:  All button-down shirts must be buttoned except for the top two buttons.

Note:  If an student wears black pants, their top must be a contrasting color.  (No black on black.)

 

 

ARTICLE OF NON-COMPLIANCE

·         No cargo pants

·         No baggie/skateboard pants

·         No denim tops or bottoms or look a like denim/corduroy stretch pants

·         No spandex pants

·         No stirrup pants

·         No mini/micro skirts (no more that five inches above the knee)

·         No hats, caps, headbands, or bandanas

·         No bare midriff or low cut scoop neck tops

·         No tank tops, tube tops, halter tops, or sleeveless shirts

·         No tee shirts

·         No off the shoulder garments

·         No sheer clothing

·         No chains, dog collars, or spiked bracelets/necklaces

·         No body piercing (earrings are acceptable)

·         Any clothing or article deemed offensive, sexually suggestive, condoning violence, drug/alcohol/tobacco use, suicide, or vulgar language

·         Shorts that are more that five inches above the knee

·         The display of any undergarments

·         No flip flop type shoes.  Open toe shoes/sandals will be acceptable.

·         No hooded sweatshirts unless they are school issued or possess the school logo.

·         Zip-up hooded sweatshirts are not allowed.

·         Medical type scrubs will not be allowed.

·         No exposed body piercing jewelry, including tongue rings.  Band-Aids covering a piercing will not be acceptable.  (earrings are acceptable)

 

DISCIPLINE GUIDELINES

All students will attend school in uniform.  The following is a guide for violation of the uniform policy:

 

Grades 9-12

 

·         1st Level of Offense:

At the discretion of the principal, the student will be retained in the office or placed in In-School Suspension until a student/parent/guardian provides a proper change of clothing.

 

·         2nd Level of Offense:

At the discretion of the principal, students will be retained in the office or placed in In-School Suspension until a student/parent/guardian provides a proper change of clothing.

 

·         3rd Level of Offense:

At the discretion of the principal, students swill be retained in the office or placed in In-School Suspension until a student/parent/guardian provides a proper change of clothing.  In the event that a parent/guardian cannot be reached on the day of the violation, the parent/guardian may be asked to accompany the student to school to meet with the principal prior to his/her return to the classroom.  The student will receive a one-day In-School-Suspension. Parent/guardian will be notified in writing.

 

·         4th Level of Offense:

At the discretion of the principal, all subsequent violations will result in In-School Suspension, Loss of Privileges, or Out-of-
School Suspension.                    

 

Note:  When possible, the school will attempt to provide a student who is wearing a non-compliant top with a top that is in compliance.
