School Rules

RESPECT

A sound educational environment is built on respect. As a student you must show respect toward the teacher at all times. It is absolutely necessary for the teacher to have order and be organized so that he or she can teach up to 30 students at one time. You must remember you cannot respond to your teacher the way you would to one of your peers if you feel you have not been treated fairly. The teacher has authority over you. At the same time a teacher must show respect toward their students. Teachers are human. They make mistakes. If you feel this has happened, you should do the following. Ask to talk with your teacher after or before class when you can express your feelings in private. You may see your counselor, principal, assistant principal and you may request a parent conference.

WORKING TO YOUR ABILITY

The administration and faculty expects you to work to the best of your ability. Our goal is to give you the best education possible. This can only be achieved if you are made to work and learn as much as you are capable of, whether you are a special education, developmental, regular, honors, or advanced placement student.

HOME ENVIRONMENT

Scranton High School understands that there are home situations which are far from ideal and in many cases make it difficult for a student to learn. The administration, faculty and guidance counselors stand ready to help. Talk with your counselor first. It will be beneficial to you as a student and to the teacher, if there is an awareness of a home situation or a problem which is making it difficult for you to learn and the teacher to teach.

DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSE

Scranton High School will do everything possible to help a student overcome a drug or alcohol problem. It is the policy of the Scranton School Board to EXPELL ANY STUDENT WHO AFTER A THOROUGH INVESTIGATION is found to be a substance abuser and will not participate in an approved substance abuse treatment program. This action is necessary to protect the health, welfare, and safety of other students.

TARDINESS TO HOMEROOM

AFTER EVERY 2ND UNEXCUSED TARDY DETENTION WILL BE ASSIGNED AND PARENT NOTIFIED.

TARDINESS TO SCHOOL

TARDINESS TO CLASS

        2. Unexcused tardiness by students which exceeds 3 minutes will be assigned detention on each occasion.

BOOKBAGS

Many schools are banning bookbags from being brought to class. Some students carry unnecessary items which they take out in class and cause a disturbance. The banning of bookbags from being brought to class has been discussed. We realize that for the conscientious student bookbags make it easier for you to organize and carry your materials. We will continue to allow you to bring bookbags to class with the provision that they could be banned if it causes an increase in problems.

PAGERS AND CELL PHONES

By state law pagers and phones are not allowed to be brought to school. If a student is found to have a pager in his possession it will be taken and a parent must report to the school to claim it. If it happens again the pager will not be return.

LASER PENS

Laser pens are not allowed in school. They disrupt the educational process and could cause harm if shined directly in someone's eye. Laser pens will be confiscated and a 6:30 detention assigned if a student is found to have one in his possession.

TRUANCY

Students are not allowed to leave school property at any time during the school day.

FIGHTING

Any student who is found, to have initiated a physical confrontation with another student will be subjected to a 10 day out-of-school suspension. The incident will be reported to the police. Depending upon the seriousness of the incident, alternative placement may be sought, after the 10 day suspension has expired.
