Stories and News from around the district
The Scranton Board of School Directors is excited to announce the
appointment of Dr. Erin Keating as the district’s next superintendent. Dr. Keating currently serves as the superintendent of the Old Forge School District, a position she has held since July 2019. Dr. Keating expects to begin leading Scranton in April 2024.
“I am thrilled and humbled to have the opportunity to return to Scranton and collaborate with so many dedicated leaders, educators, and staff,” Keating said. “It is not an easy decision to leave Old Forge, with the life-long friendships I’ve created along with all the work we’ve done to educate and serve the children and families of the Old Forge school community. Scranton is a major assignment and a logical step for me at this juncture in my career. I’ve been fortunate to grow as a leader and a professional since leading Old Forge. Together, we can make Scranton one of the premier urban districts in Pennsylvania!” Keating added.
Before leading Old Forge, Dr. Keating served as the Chief of Leadership Development and School Operations here in Scranton from 2016 to 2019. Prior to taking on that assignment, she was the Chief Academic Officer from 2014 until 2016. Dr. Keating also brings substantial building leadership experience back to Scranton, as she led the Wyoming Valley West high school as principal for over five years and served as Elementary Principal for almost two years in the same district. She began her administrative career as an Assistant High School Principal. Dr. Keating taught English in the middle school at Wyoming Valley West for eight years. Dr. Keating is also extensively involved in the culture and life of the city of Scranton, as she participates in many civic and social organizations.
Dr. Keating graduated from West Chester University with a degree in English, then earned three master’s degrees from Wilkes University, in Classroom Technology, Educational Strategies and Development and Educational Leadership. Dr. Keating capped her educational career by earning a doctorate in educational leadership, also from Wilkes University.
Scranton Search Committee Chair Sean McAndrew said the board is pleased to make this announcement after a comprehensive process. “The entire board, both this one and the previous board, worked hard on this project, and I am grateful for their efforts. We interviewed some excellent candidates, and really took the time to deliberate well at each phase of the process, especially given the leadership needed to address the challenges facing Scranton,” McAndrew said.
“We have talked candidly about the current challenges facing Scranton, and our efforts as a board to continuously grow in our role as well.” McAndrew added.
“We believe Dr. Keating can lead us in designing and delivering a compelling future for the students and families of the Scranton School District, and we are excited to welcome her back to Scranton!” Board President Ty Holmes said. “On behalf of the board, the district, and the entire school community, we want to extend our deepest appreciation to Mr. Pat Laffey for serving as our acting superintendent throughout this process, and we are extremely grateful that Mr. Laffey returns to his position as our Chief Financial Officer.”
“Finally, a note of thanks for those who participated in the focus group discussions and completed a survey early in the process. We value your opinions and will continue to utilize that information as we plan for the future of Scranton. It is vital that all students are successful, and that we respect their aspirations, while embracing our cultural diversity so they can be successful in a 21st century workplace,” Holmes concluded.
The board will introduce Dr. Keating to the school community soon and begin working on a series of transition activities as we implement a series of governance and leadership practices to lead Scranton into the future. Please be looking for a series of announcements in the weeks ahead around a series of future-focused activities.
